What do you like the most about working at AKA Recruitment International?
I love the TEAMWORK at AKA, and how we all pull on our own strings to make the whole work. It really is special. I enjoy the industry and all the challenges we face end up being like a puzzle that must be solved, and I love solving puzzles! I’ve also learned so much in the time I’ve worked at AKA, the biggest lesson is that “change is constant”.
How would you describe Cape Town in three words?
This is really a tough question – as Cape Town is so diverse that three words couldn’t possibly sum it all up. This is my home, so my view of this place is different to that of a tourist. Just like with your own family and home, sometimes things are loving, fun and sunny and sometimes they’re not. Cape Town is much of the same for me, I love the opportunities we have to get away and escape into nature; be it on the beach, for a hike in the mountains or for a glass of wine on one of the estates nearby. I love autumn and winter (yes!) and the colder rainy weather and the heat from the crackling fireplace – but spring and summer aren’t too bad either 😉
If I really had to choose I’d say: HOME, ADVENTURE and LOVE. But then sometimes when I’m in my car on the way to work the only word that gets stuck in my head is: Traffic!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you want to have with you?
My Kindle (loaded with books)
Sunscreen! (and a hat, and a sun umbrella, and more sunscreen!)
My Family (we come as a package deal)
What is your favourite book and why?
A series that I’ve been hooked on for the past two years is the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon, amazing story and one that I hold quite dear to my heart (mostly because sheer amount of hours I’ve put into consuming it) but I couldn’t give it my “favourite book” award… Then I was thinking of narrowing this one down to one of the more contemporary “greats” like The Kite Runner, Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But I can’t. Not because I didn’t enjoy them but because I didn’t read them twice (or thrice). There’s only one book that I read annually for the past four years. Discovery of Witches (trilogy) by Deborah Harkness. I sometimes read the rest of the series as well, but the first book is still the best for me with just the right mix of adventure, fantasy, romance, suspense and great characters… it’s perfect escapism!
Describe the best vacation you’ve ever had in South Africa?
We love camping! my husband and I with our two kids recently went to a Bush Camp near Montagu in the Western Cape. Roughing it out with the bare essentials and washing up in a rickety wooden stall with a single black pipe connected to the uppermost post as the “shower” – is our idea of fun! It’s so great to see the kids explore nature, to not have internet or cellular access and just to… be.
